Tropical disturbances in Atlantic Basin

HOLT, Fla., June 16, 2017–The National Hurricane Center is watching two areas of interest in the Atlantic basin.

An area of low pressure is expected to form over the northwestern Caribbean Sea and the Yucatan Peninsula sometime this weekend.

Conditions appear favorable for development, so it has been given a 60 percent (medium) chance of development during the next five days as it moves slowly northwestward into the southern Gulf of Mexico early next week.

A tropical wave southwest of the Cabo Verde islands has become more organized during the past 24 hours and is now identified as Invest 92L.

This system has been given a 20 percent (low) chance of development during the next 48 hours and a 40 percent (medium) chance of development during the next five days as it moves westward over the tropical Atlantic.

Neither of these areas of interest is an immediate threat to Florida.
